Produced by Jim and William Reid alongside engineer Alan Moulder, Automatic introduced a heavier, synth-bass-driven alternative rock sound while retaining the band's signature fuzzy guitar textures. The album produced major modern rock radio hits including "Blues From a Gun" and "Head On" (famously covered by Pixies), alongside fan favorites like "Between Planets", "Half Way to Crazy", and "Here Comes Alice".
