Fully Band-Signed First Edition: Ramones: An American Band by Jim Bessman
This listing presents a Holy Grail artifact of punk rock history: an authentically fully hand-signed First Edition softcover copy of Ramones: An American Band by music journalist Jim Bessman. Published in 1993 by St. Martin's Press (New York), this definitive authorized biography is rendered exceptionally rare by the signatures of the band’s late 1980s–1990s touring lineup inscribed across the half-title page.
Ramones: An American Band chronicles the explosive, influential trajectory of Forest Hills, Queens’ most celebrated sons—the founding fathers of American punk rock. From their 1974 origins at CBGB and landmark self-titled debut album to two decades of relentless global touring, Jim Bessman provides an intimate, authorized look at the internal dynamics, creative ethos, and cultural impact of the group. Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 confirmed their permanent stature as architects of modern alternative music.
What elevates this copy into a premier music archive volume is the exceptional placement of four distinct signatures in blue ballpoint pen directly on the half-title page. Lead vocalist Joey Ramone inscribed a characteristic cheeky inscription, writing "BUT OFFICER I DIDN'T DO IT!" followed by his signature and date "Joey Ramone 93'. Guitarist Johnny Ramone signed neatly alongside legendary drummer Marky Ramone, who added his dramatic sweeping flourish. Bassist C.J. Ramone signed at the upper left, complete with a self-portrait cartoon face sketch. Accompanied by an official RR Auction Certificate of Authenticity (Catalog 564, Item 9172), this volume represents an irreplaceable piece of counterculture memorabilia featuring four key members signed during the band's active era.
CONSIGNER NOTES: I was a huge fan of the Ramones, the iconic pioneer of American punk rock. So when I had the chance to get a signed copy of this book in an auction many years ago, I had to have it. The addition of CJ Ramone’s sketch and Johnny Ramone’s added note, “But officer I didn’t do it!” made this a must-have for my collection. Sadly, we lost both Joey Ramone and Johnny Ramone over twenty years ago – making this set even more important (and rare).
I purchased this from RR Auction, who indicated it was from the private collection of the Ramones’ head of security (Gene Frawley). In addition, it was “Pre-certified by Real.” (Real is a well-regarded autograph authenticator that specializes in rock and roll autographs.)
