Autographed Drumhead: Hand-Signed by Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead)

This entry showcases an authentic, primary-source piece of psychedelic rock, world music percussion, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame history: an original matte black Remo Emperor Black Suede drumhead hand-signed by legendary Grateful Dead drummer and ethnomusicologist Mickey Hart.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Mickey Hart joined the Grateful Dead in 1967, forming one of the most innovative and celebrated dual-drummer rhythm sections in rock history alongside Bill Kreutzmann. Known affectionately as the "Rhythm Devils," the pair transformed concert improvisation through complex polyrhythms and world percussion traditions. Hart’s pioneering sonic explorations powered classic albums such as Anthem of the Sun, Live/Dead, Workingman's Dead, and American Beauty, while his solo work earned multiple Grammy Awards, including the first-ever Grammy for Best World Music Album.

The drumhead features a matte black textured suede finish with the official Remo Emperor logo printed in silver at top center. Positioned prominently across the left side of the drumhead, Mickey Hart has rendered a sweeping signature in silver paint pen ("Mickey Hart"), providing exceptional visual contrast against the dark background.

Preserved in fine collector condition with clean surfaces, sharp silver pen ink contrast, and intact collar edges, this autographed drumhead serves as an ultimate centerpiece for Grateful Dead archivists, rock percussion collectors, and 1960s music historians.

Drumhead Specifications

  • AUTHENTIC REMO BLACK SUEDE DRUMHEAD: Original Remo Emperor Black Suede drumhead featuring a matte black textured finish, made in the USA.
  • HIGH-CONTRAST METALLIC DISPLAY: Features silver Remo manufacturer branding and a bold silver signature across the dark surface.
  • EXCELLENT DISPLAY CONDITION: Preserved in fine condition with unblemished matte surfaces and clean outer rim edges.

Autograph Specifications & Provenance

  • HAND-SIGNED BY MICKEY HART: Authentically autographed in silver paint pen across the face by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Mickey Hart.
  • THIRD-PARTY AUTHENTICATION: Accompanied by a formal James Spence Authentication (JSA) Letter of Authenticity with a matching serial-numbered tamper-evident label mounted to the lower edge.
  • Consignor Notes: Legendary Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart is not an easy signature to obtain in person – as he is no longer very public and doesn’t do public signing events. When I saw this signed drumhead come up in Iconic Auctions several years ago, I was drawn to just how amazing it looked with such a large, bold signature in silver marker on a black Remo pro model drumhead. I don’t think I had ever seen his signature quite that bold.

The original auction listing noted “Hart all but refuses to sign any musical equipment nowadays!”  (And that was several years ago – Hart is even far less public these days). Best yet, this comes with a certificate of authentication from James Spence Autographs (JSA), one of the most respected authenticators of entertainment autographs in the industry.
