This entry showcases an authentic, primary-source piece of 20th-century American historical fiction, Pulitzer Prize lore, and fine press publishing ephemera: a Deluxe Signed Limited First Edition volume of Mexico, hand-signed on the preliminary limitation page by master novelist James A. Michener.
A celebrated master of sweeping historical sagas, James A. Michener (1907–1997) won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for Tales of the South Pacific before publishing monumental classics such as Hawaii (1959), Chesapeake (1978), and Texas (1985). Published in 1992 by Random House, Mexico offers an immersive, multi-generational epic centered on bullfighting, cultural heritage, and centuries of Mexican history, narrated through the eyes of American journalist Norman Clay as he investigates his family's deep roots in the region.
Bound in rich plum-colored cloth, this deluxe presentation volume features a gold-stamped "J·A·M" monogram set within an ornate gilded cartouche on the front cover, gold-embossed spine titling, and a matching original slipcase.
On a dedicated preliminary page reading "Of the first edition of MEXICO four hundred copies have been specially bound. These books are signed by the author, and numbered 1 to 400", James A. Michener has rendered a sweeping autograph in blue ink:
"James A. Michener"
This copy is hand-numbered 278 in black ink out of the strictly limited edition of 400 copies.
Preserved in fine condition with crisp cloth boards, bright gold stamping, a tight binding, clean interior pages, and a solid slipcase, this signed first edition serves as an essential centerpiece for James A. Michener completists, historical fiction archivists, and fine press displays.
