Custom Framed Signed First Day Cover: Hand-Signed by Jim Henson (1986 USPS Love Stamp)
This entry showcases an authentic, primary-source piece of American pop culture, puppetry, television, and philatelic history: an original 1986 United States Postal Service First Day of Issue ceremony program hand-signed by legendary visionary and Muppets creator Jim Henson.
Universally recognized as one of the most creative minds of the 20th century, Jim Henson revolutionized puppetry and children's entertainment. Through the creation of The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, and iconic feature films like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, Henson brought unforgettable characters to life—most notably Kermit the Frog, Ernie, and Rowlf the Dog.
This official USPS ceremony program commemorated the First Day of Issue for the 1986 22-cent "Love" stamp, designed by artist Saul Mandel and issued in New York City on January 30, 1986. The program's interior details the event schedule—highlighting musical selections performed by Jim Henson and Rowlf the Dog—and features an affixed 1986 Love stamp cancelled with an official postmark.
Positioned prominently in the center fold of the ceremony program, Jim Henson has rendered a bold, beautiful signature in black ink ("Jim Henson"). The signed document is mounted in a double matting presentation featuring dark blue inner borders and a cream mat, accompanied by an etched silver plaque reading: "SIGNED BY / JIM HENSON / JANUARY 30, 1986". The entire display is housed in a warm, natural oak wood frame.
Preserved in fine condition with sharp ink contrast, clean program paper, and a pristine custom frame, this autographed historical piece serves as an ultimate centerpiece for Jim Henson archivists, Muppet memorabilia collectors, and American pop culture historians.

HAND-SIGNED BY JIM HENSON: Authentically autographed in black ink on the official ceremony program by Muppets creator Jim Henson.
-
HISTORIC PHILATELIC EVENT: Signed directly in connection with his official performance as Rowlf the Dog at the USPS first-day ceremony.
- CONSIGNOR NOTES: There are few people that have had as much impact on millions of American children and adults as Jim Henson, the American puppeteer, filmmaker, and creator of the Muppets, whose innovative work transformed television, film, and puppetry. Without Jim’s creative genius, we would have no Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster, or Kermit the Frog (for whom Jim was the voice of the original character).
In his sadly too-short time on Earth, Jim produced the classic “The Muppet Show,” created “Fraggle Rock”, “The Jim Henson Hour”, “The Storyteller”, and “Dinosaurs” -- and directed the films, The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.
Being this First Day of Issue launch event for the US Postal Service “Love” stamp was held at Jim’s own studio in New York City, one can reason it was only attended by a handful of US Postal Service representatives along with Jim’s studio staff. So, it’s no surprise that this is a very rare event program. (I have personally never seen another – not even an unsigned example – in my decades of collecting). Jim Henson’s autograph is highly sought after (and not very common, given his death at age 53). And the fact that it contains the official US Postal Service First Day of Issue stamp made it a must when I saw this in an auction years ago.
