Typed Autographed Letter: Hand-Signed by Garry Trudeau (Doonesbury Executive Stationery)
This entry showcases an authentic, primary-source piece of American newspaper comic strip history, political satire lore, and 1990s pop culture ephemera: an official typed letter on custom executive stationery, hand-signed by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Garry Trudeau.
Created by Garry Trudeau in 1970, Doonesbury stands as one of the most influential and acclaimed syndicated comic strips in American journalism history. Chronicles following Michael Doonesbury and an evolving cast of characters provided sharp social and political commentary across six decades of American presidential elections, social movements, and cultural shifts. In 1975, Trudeau made history as the first comic strip artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, cementing Doonesbury as a cultural touchstone syndicated across over 1,400 newspapers worldwide.
Typed on official 7.25" x 10.5" cream executive letterhead bearing the blind-embossed or printed top header "DOONESBURY", this 1990 correspondence offers a rare glimpse into Trudeau's professional interactions regarding his comic strips.
Dated September 17, 1990, the message reads:
"Dear Tom:
Thanks very much for not taking advantage of our misunderstanding. I appreciate it.
I'll try to get the strips to you soon. Meanwhile, here's the photograph you asked for for your just-married pal.
All the best,"
Directly above his typed name credit, Garry Trudeau has rendered a classic, sweeping signature in black ink ("Garry Trudeau").
Preserved in fine, fresh condition with clean off-white stationery stock, sharp unbent edges, legible courier type font, no significant creasing or mailing folds, and a dark signature flourish, this autographed letter serves as an essential centerpiece for American journalism archivists, comic art collectors, and political satire history displays.
