Advance Reading Copy: Forrest Gump by Winston Groom (1986)
This entry showcases an authentic, primary-source piece of modern American literary history, Hollywood film lore, and pre-publication publishing trade ephemera: an original Advance Reading Copy (ARC) of Forrest Gump by author Winston Groom.
An acclaimed Southern novelist and historian, Winston Groom (1943–2020) achieved monumental cultural impact with his 1986 picaresque novel Forrest Gump. Following the humorous and poignant adventures of an endearing Alabama man navigating three decades of mid-century American history—from University of Alabama football to the Vietnam War and ping-pong diplomacy—the novel served as the basis for Paramount's landmark 1994 film adaptation starring Tom Hanks, which won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and became a global phenomenon.
Issued in softcover paper wrappers prior to the official March 1986 trade release, this advance reading copy was produced by Doubleday & Company, Inc. strictly for promotional preview, bookseller distribution, and early media reviews. The bright blue front cover features monochrome artwork of a figure gazing at the water alongside diagonal text reading "Advance Reading Copy". The rear cover outlines the novel's synopsis, early editorial blurbs by Willie Morris and Jim Harrison, publication details ($14.95 price point; March 7, 1986 release), and a notice reading "Special Reading Copy NOT FOR SALE".
Preserved in fine condition with a clean spine, bright blue wrappers, and an unblemished text block, this pre-publication ARC represents an essential collectible for Winston Groom completists, American film archivists, and modern literature displays.
