Inspired by Geisel's own tedious experiences navigating medical clinics and diagnostic tests, the narrative follows an elderly protagonist undergoing a marathon medical examination at the "Golden Years Clinic on Century Campus." The volume retains its original factory shrink-wrap over the cloth slipcase, preserving the entire ensemble in pristine condition. Bound inside prior to the title page is the publisher's dedicated limitation page stating: "Of the first edition of YOU'RE ONLY OLD ONCE! five hundred copies have been specially bound. These books are signed by the author and numbered 1 to 500." On this leaf, Dr. Seuss has rendered his classic signature in bold black ink alongside the handwritten edition number 479. While a departure from his typical children's literature, Dr. Seuss uses his signature rhyme, rhythm, and whimsical illustration style to critique the depersonalized and bureaucratic nature of modern healthcare. You would think with all of his classic books that he published, Dr. Seuss would have issued a number of different signed limited editions over the years. But in all my research, I could only find three that he ever published as a signed limited edition. So when I had a chance to get this one in an auction, I grabbed it.  Dr. Seuss is such a beloved author of such timeless classics (The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Horton Gives a Hoot, The Lorax, among others). This gorgeous, specially-bound edition comes housed in a matching publisher’s slipcase – which itself still has its original shrink-wrap.
