Limited Signed Edition Hardcover Book: Hand-Signed by A.A. Milne (When I Was Very Young)

This entry showcases an authentic, primary-source piece of children's literature history, fine press bookmaking, and British literary lore: a rare 1930 limited signed edition hardcover book of When I Was Very Young, hand-signed on the limitation page by legendary author A.A. Milne.

Best known as the creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, Christopher Robin, and the Hundred Acre Wood, Alan Alexander Milne (1882–1956) stands among the most beloved authors in English literature. Originally published in 1930 as an autobiographical essay describing his early childhood memories, When I Was Very Young offers an intimate reflection on Milne's formative upbringing in late Victorian London. Printed in a strictly limited run by Elmer Adler's acclaimed Pynson Printers in New York and distributed through Random House, the volume features charming, whimsical illustrations by E.H. Shepard, who famously illustrated Milne's classic Pooh books.

This limited edition volume is bound in orange patterned cloth featuring repeating illustrations of children and animals, finished with a printed paper spine label ("When I Was Very Young • Milne"). Designed with deckle-edged rag paper, the book features fine typography set off by large, decorative orange initial capitals.

On the colophon/limitation page, beside a large illuminated orange letter "T", A.A. Milne has rendered a fine, delicate autograph in graphite pencil ("A.A. Milne"). The colophon confirms that only 842 copies were printed in February 1930 (603 for distribution in America), with this specific copy hand-numbered as No. 526.

Preserved in fine collector condition with bright, unfaded orange cloth covers, a tight square spine, unblemished paper spine label, clean untrimmed deckle-edge interior pages, and a crisp pencil signature, this signed limited edition serves as an essential centerpiece for A.A. Milne bibliophiles, children's literature archivists, and fine press book collectors.

  • CONSIGNOR NOTES: Who doesn’t love the stories of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin? There are few more beloved children’s books that have been cherished as long as A.A. Milne’s classic story books. Even today, Winnie the Pooh is still as popular as ever. So when the chance came up in an auction to own one of his rare signed limited edition books, I had to have it. There were only 603 of these signed limited books issued in the United States (and only another 249 more issued elsewhere).  At almost 100 years old, one can only wonder how many of these are still in existence today. And the ones that are available are often in lesser condition – or missing the all-important matching slipcase. Here we have a really nice copy in its original customer slipcase
